The message center says coolant level low, so I checked it and the reserve tank was half full and so I filledit up. The message center continue to indicate that the coolant level was low. The next morning I started it so it can warm up from the night cold. The message center did not indicate the coolant level is low, it was running for about 15 mins. About 5 minutes into my way into work the message center indicated that the coolant level was low again. Do I have an air pocket, do I have to clear the codes or is the sensor defective? The engine temp is gauge says the engine temp. is normal.
Any ideas?

coolant level
Hi, I'm new to the forum and this is my first response
I have exactly the same problem as Craig, temp gauge normal, coolant level normal after filling but message centre indicates low coolant level. Does the method for clearing oil service message work for all types of codes from the message centre? Or is there a possibility of a defect sensor?

Check the level and see if you are up to the "max" mark.
If not then refill and check when the engine is cold.
If you are then your sensor has failed or your float sunk. ( replace coolant tank, cap and level sensor)
use only Volvo antifreeze and distilled water to top up.

I removed the coolant tank off the metal holder and looked for a sensor or anything that had wires coming off of it, Nothing, just two hoses and when I replaced it back on the holder the coolant low went out. It didn't come back on for a few days and yesterday it came back on again. I cannot find the coolant level sensor.

Folks,
State you year, engine and trans combo so we can help you.
You should put it in your profile so you do not have to keep writing it.
The XC90 came with 4 different engines ( 1 is a diesel) and 2 different transmissions.

Volvo shows it a s inserted from the bottom of your coolant tank . These can be hard to see unless replacing the tank
Can you see a round float in your coolant bottle??
has someone worked on this previously?

Both the 5 cyl and 6cyl have them . it appears some after market tanks may not. But the plug that the old one went in should still be close by
