Tire Size question

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

Tire Size question

Post by LeeJ »

Hi - I have a 2002 Volvo S80 that has (4) 215 55R16 tires. I have the opportunity to purchase 4 Blizzak winter tires for it but they are size 225 60R 16. Can I (safely) have these installed on my rims?

Thanks, Lee

Yes you can, I have about the same size on my 99 S80, but you may have some rubbing when turning really sharply, and also that the speedometer will be off a bit. My speedo was saying I was going about 75mph and was clocked at 81, so just be aware of that...

It's rather a large jump of over 5% rolling diameter increase.

Use this guide from this web page to see for your self: http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html

Your speedo will read 60mph when you are actually doing 63.1mph

I hope it's okay to jump in here with another question. My 2007 - S80 came with 245/40/18 tires and I haven't been able to find anyone who can tell me why they put such wide tires on a sedan. It does have the sport package.

Thank you for any information you can offer.

High power output, plus sporty suspension = drivers happy to push their car to higher limits. Also with the 18 inch rims, they look great. Look at most of the larger BMWs and Mercs in the same class category; they also have VERY wide tires. Volvo is only trying to keep up with the Joneses.

My own Volvo 960 has benefited markedly by having 235/45/17 tyres (in place of the 195/65/15s)

Generally the wider the tire is when combining this wuth lower profile/larger wheels the greater the roadholding (especially when comparing like tires)
