How do I get the climate controls out?

Post by kvangenechten »

I am new to the Volvo's and I need to change the bulbs in the climate control. I did a search, searched a few places and the only thing I found was remove the radio and push it out. I tried this and it will not come out. Any pointer?

I have a 94 850. Thanks.

Welcome to MVS,

The procedure is quite different depending on which style of climate control unit you have.

The Electronic Climate Control (ECC) has the temperature settings graduated in degrees whereas the MCC has graduated width red bars for the temp.

The ECC also has AUT settings whereas no such settings are there on the MCC.

Report back which system you have and I can help you out - I have re-lamped both systems and their variations on the MCC.

I di the exact thing to replace the bulbs. U have to pull the radio out. If u find it easier to unplug the radio make sure u have the codes to turn it back on. It takes a little two handed pushing from the rear of the climate control to get it out sometimes, mine took a little to get out but it will pop. I have the Automatic climate controls.

To relamp the MCC you need to remove the temp knobs and the mode knob. I use a pair of pliers with the jaws covered with a rag to pull the knobs off. The rag will keep you from scratching up the knobs.

Once the knobs are of off it will reveal two phillips head screws. Remove the screws and then remove the faceplate and the plastic lens that is behind the faceplate. Sometimes the lens comes out with the faceplate and sometimes it doesn't.

There are two versions of the lighting system. The older version uses a standard wedge based bulb that you can buy at any auto parts store. The newer versions has the same lamps and base design as the idiot lights on the instrument cluster. On that style you need to remove the PC board that holds the lamp as they are installed from behind.

There are some additional tips in this thread - Scroll down and mike850 has some fairly detailed instructions.
