Thanks for the tip about the pan side gasket. however I don't think that is the problem.
Let me tell you about today's chapter in the Saga of the missing slippery stuff. I did indeed put the car up on the ramps. I put a gallon of oil in the sump. Next I pulled off the timing belt cover & the valley cover. Well I have to tell you what happened next is very strange. I noticed a small stream of new engine oil creeping out from under the car, before I had even started the engine. crawled under & checked the sump pan & the drain plug. Both dry & clean. A little brilliant investigation & I think I have solved the problem. With the car On the ramps. the intake cam is higher than the exhaust cam. when I poured in the oil, it flowed back to the exhaust cam, & out the cam seal. So I will change the cam oil seals & report back.
1995 850 basic/ lost all engine oil
Well the weather & my schedule has changed enough to get back to my 850. pulled the cam shaft gears off & there hanging loosely, on the end of the exhaust cam was that pesky little cam seal. mystery solved. or at least part of it.
Does anybody have any suggestions on how the engine developed enough crank case pressure to blow out that seal?
Don't forget it has no turbo charger & the cylinder head has just been completely re manufactured. with all new gaskets & seals.
Just to be safe I am replacing all four cam seals. Thanks

That should be the ONLY reason.I'm 99% sure that flame trap was completelly clogged.
Remove that plastic screen out of the flame trap and throw it away...almost all of MVS members, including me,did it.

Perhaps also time for a new oil trap and new clamps.
A motor I recently reconditioned had a totally blocked oil trap engine port at only 75,000 miles.
