broken hood latch '94 850.

Post by warrenout »

In the midst of a single digit cold snap, my battery died. I went to open the hood and the plastic "T" shaped latch release broke. How do I open the hood now to recharge/replace said battery?

It has happened to all of us. I bent a hook on the end of a coat hanger and fished it in through the grill to snag the safety latch and release it.

There are normally several of the latches listed on eBay and it might help to look at the pictures of them to see how it is made. The hook should be about 1/4" wide.

I've had this happen to me as well. After I got the hood open the way that Lee explained, I rigged up some 'emergency latch releases' with some string trimmer line to each of the latches. If the hood latches ever fail again (or the cable) the end of the lines can easily be fished out from under the bumper and pulled to manually release the latches.
