T5 engine from a Volvo 850 to a S40, will it work?

Post by DUPL3SSI »

I have just purchased a Volvo 850 T5 engine that I'm going to refurbish and fix up but just wondering does anyone know if its possible for the engine to fit a late 2000 Volvo S40 2.0 or shall I just re-sell it? :)

No, the extra cylinder makes it too long to fit between the inner fenders in that S40.

The S40 used to be a T4, so the car itself is a lot wider than the normal S40...

it is not wider between the inner fenders in engine compartment. Raise hood and measure the rough dimension of current engine from back to front of cam cover and then do that measurement on the T5 engine. Now look down at front of engine for the available extra room for a longer engine. Is the added length of the T5 engine available in the space not used by the current engine?
Next problem is the bracket to attach engine mount on front of engine. The holes in the S40 engine to use foe the bracket do not exist on the 5 cylinder. Nedcar S40 hangs its motors while the T5 motor is supported on the bottom.
There is a lengthy list of hardships to overcome. You can't move the trans closer to the left side as then you need expensive custom driveshaft work and you will lose the torque steer cancelling effects of equal length drive shafts .
