Hey, since you paid for the diagnostics. Ask them for the code that they retrieved. Every service/purchase you make at your dealer is databased on VIDA, so they can get it for you. When you get it, post it, maybe there's something that can be done. If it's shifting fine, etc., who knows.

Transmission error may simply be a Vehicle Speed Sensor connector problem. Need to get the code.

What did you ever do about the transmission problem, fixed or not?new99S80owner wrote:You might see below, that not too long ago, I took out my ABS/STC computer module, and shipped it out to Victor Rocha for repair. Thank you Victor, I put the rebuilt ABS/STC module back into my '99 S80, and the ABS/STC lights went out.... problem fixed for under $175 vs. Volvo Dealership of $930 repair. ...
Something New has popped up on my message center over this past weekend to absorb more of my hard earned money...
I now have a "Transmission Service Required" message on my dash. I took my S80 back over to the Volvo dealership, and they read the code generated on their scanner. They came back to me and said that my transmission is on it's way out. Guestimated cost of repair is $3,450.00.
The car is running fine. Needless to say I slapped a For Sale sign on this car, and I'm trying to get out!! I've had no luck..... probably because people read interesting topics of concern like this.... 1 problem after the next. I tried to erase the code myself by pulling the fuse # 24 on the left side of the steering wheel. DON't DO THIS!! Now I have the SRS Airbag service required light showing up on the dash, also. I'm ready to push the car off a bridge and collect the insurance money. PLEASE... for the LOVE of GOD, can someone tell me if there is reason to believe that the transmission is really bad, or is it just a bad signal from the computer brain of the Car? the Car now has 92,670 miles. Is there hope, or should I sell the car for half of what it's worth..... I loved the car at one point. Hoping to fix these few problems so it will last forever. I've had the car less than a year, and replaced Power Steering reservoir, Throttlebody, ABS/STC computermodule, had a computer software upgrade done,... now the transmission!!??? I bought this car in February of 2005, this year, with 87,600 miles on it. I have not even put 10,000 miles on it yet......VERY FRUSTRATING!!
Any one know what OBD11 code P1633 vehicle speed signal is in reference to. Is this a wheel speed sensor, ABS controller or what. One year after Victors ABS control repair and now ABS and STC Message and transmission service lights come on within 50 miles of resetting computer every time. 99 S80 2.9 133,000 miles

Anyone know what or where the (vehicle speed sensor) is located? Still chasing problems with the ABS STC Brake failure etc.and spedo and tac quiting almost every day we drive this car. Dealer says vehicle speed signal missing and wants to replace the ABS module again. Last two changed did not make any difference.
Thanks for any suggestions, Uncletom

the vehivle speed sensor is located on the right hand side of the gearbox where the right side driveshaft comes out. there is a 10mm botl holding it in and a tellow and black wire coming from it.
it is easiest access from underneath the car

its been almost 4 months since i last posted and thanks for the forum tracking i received your reply
I have had my hand on the unit and thought this might be the culprit but still not sure replacing it or maybe it can be cleaned. I will remove it next time on the hoist and see if there is any physical sine of a problem. I have never been one to just throw parts at a rig and hope for the best. We have resolved to just disconnect the battery about every other day and then its just fine for approx. 150 miles then the Tac,spedo quit and the abs, stc, etc, etc lights come on. Volvo thinks its the abs controller again but the last three installed have not made any difference. Understand why I have lost faith in the Dealers method ?

hi,
im having problems with my s80 t6 1999 model. i only have 3rd gear to go forward and reverse !
i also have had a few 850 t5`s and found there is a problem with the abs units, even new ones.
they are made in the far east and the solder quality is very poor, there is a "how to do it" on www.volvoforums.org.uk but this website is closed for now, but may open soon.
well worth re-soldering the joints once openeening up the abs module, because if you renew it, the same thing is likely to happen.
ps you can test the vss with a multimeter, you should get a reading of approx 567 ohms ONE WAY. with your black lead from your multimeter on the yellow wire and your red multimeter lead on the black wire.
i just did mine yesterday and found mine to be ok.
still got my problem !!!aarrggg!!!

Thanks for the reply. I will test for the 576 ohms at the unit. This was rebuilt by Mr Rocha and was great for 11 months. When it seamed to have gone bad again i sent it back to Mr.Rocha and he assured me there was nothing wrong with my unit. Re installed the same unit and had same problem. Also had another unit sent to me from a re builder in Canada and had the same results. I have read the thread on how and where to re solder but for the price I thought i would let the pro have a shot at it. I remember something about installing better grade components in the unit when it's repaired.
Sorry about your trans problem. Mine has never had a prob. in 145K so far. I to was told that by Volvo the fluid was lifetime and was telling a friend of mine about it. He has a large auto repair shop and does trans flushes. He looked at my fluid and recommended that I don't flush it because it is too burnt and in his experience it would create a problem within a short time of the new oil causing contamanents to block small passages. I simply dropped the oil pan, wiped it out ,replaced the filter with new and replaced just the seven quarts that I removed. Oil now looks new and has almost a new oil smell. My mechanic friend will replace it for cost is it ever goes out but that is almost 3k.
Nicest car I have ever hated. The 99 S80 has many weak points in both the electronics and front suspension. Tom
