Whistling Turbo

Whistling Turbo

My car has developed a low pitched whistle related to boost pressure. It is most noticeable at low speed and low boost (possibly due to the lack or road, wind and engine noise) It is also markedly more audible on a cold engine. Sounds too low pitched to be a compressor whistle. Could it be a boost leak? Seems to have no lack of power. My car is a transition model, it has the later style timing belt but the earlier alloy lower control arms with replaceable balljoint, and the early intercooler routing (like the IPD "reverse flow" kit)

Mine whines a little bit in the mornings, especially when it's cold outside. I think it's just because the turbo is old and getting some shaft play in it.

I would like to replace the rubber boost hoses anyway. I can't find a kit for the early intercooler routing in silicone, does anyone do oem except for the dealer? (they did last 17 years after all)

I believe only dealers sell the OEM hoses - I need new ones too. IPD doesn't have silicone hoses for their reverse setup?

mine does the same when the engine is cold and gets quiet after it warms up..

they do but not listed independent of the RIP kit. Might have to send them an email. The RIP kit doesn't look identical to the early stock setup so would have to make sure the silicone bits will fit.

Do you know why they changed the routing in 1994 if the reverse flow is "superior"

Mine whistles more now in cold weather, but once warmed up barely audible if at all.

Original turbo with 210k miles on it.
