reuse head bolts?

Post by mrjacobrussell »

Hi i was hoping for some clarifacation,

I have done several head jobs in the past but and this is my first volvo.

I just got the special head job tool tool for a song, and ordered all the needed parts for the head job from fcpgroton ..

except I didnt order bolts. I just didnt think I would need them , I've never had to replace them in the past.

Has anyone reused the factory head bolts and do you have any aditional thoughts on the 3 step torque proccess.

Thanks in advance!!

Have you measured them on a stretch gauge?

If not, It is necessary to replace the bolts. They have been through quite a few heat cycles and need to be replaced.

Would not reuse the bolts I warned a friend not to do it na d when he did he actually snapped on off torquing the head down. Luckly there was still something to grab onto to pull it out. If your going for a head job just spend the extra, even if u have to wait for the bolts. U dont want to do it again

Nope I never mesured them, Just been so lucky on my mazda BP blocks in the past and never had to mess around with new bolts.

I was hopping this was some thing we could do with this engine. The 44 ft/bs plus + the angle of turn seams extream...

But I think my Mazda BP turbo engine uses a 4 layer gasekt and is torqued to about 65 ft/lbs ..

Many guys that wrench these cars for a living say that you can get a second use out of the head bolts but it violates my rule that if you need to angle torque a bolt you replace the bolt.

I know in my heart that I would get all of them torqued down until the very last bolt and the SOB would break the head off on the final angle torque and I have to do it all over again.

Shop around on the bolts but I don't think I would do anything as labor intensive as a head job without replacing the bolts. Check the prices at Tascaparts and myvolvopartsonline for comparisons with FCP.
