Trying to find the diy timingbelt for my volvo s60 non turbo

Post by jas0ny »

Hi guys Im new to this site, but very glad I have found it. Im doing the timing-belt change as well as the idler pulley and tenioner for my gf, who drives a 2001 volvo s60. I regularly work on nissans, hondas, toyotas but never on a volvo. Her car is due for a timingbelt change but im looking at the how to do it page on matthews site, but im not sure which type of motor her car is. Its a non turbo, the page im looking at shows someone doing it on turbo motor? Can someone direct me to the correct timingbelt how to for my gf car? Thank you!

Its the same as the turbo.

Remove the covers
(remove plugs optional but preferred)
Align marks
turn clockwise 180 degrees at crank
turn counterclockwise 180 degrees at crank to realign marks (releives VVT pressure)
remove crank pulley without disturbing marks.
Loosen tensioner
replace with new water pump
replace with new idler pulley
replace with new timing belt
replace with new tensioner

run through 2 crank revolutions to assure marks are perfect and timing and tension are correct.
replace covers

use all Volvo parts
top up with Volvo coolant and distilled water 50/50

Install new pressure cap on coolant bottle for safety -stick old one in trunk in a ziplock bag for emergency situation.

Owners have had issues with using low quality parts - all intake valves will bend if belt slips. This is one of those jobs to use the OEM stuff on. Especially as it is GF car.

Thanks guys! And I also spent the last hour looking for the parts, I was gonna ask if the other brands are ok for parts but your correct. Where would be the best place to purchase the oem timingbelt kit? I checked out a few sponsers from the site, but do any of them have a kit to see at a discount price! Thank you so much guys!

Not usually sold as a kit as most of it fits many motors.
Look like Volvo wholesale has some good pricing. Just call them with the VIN and tell them what you need. Some of us have local Volvo dealerships that will match the prices so it might be worth a local call for you to your local Volvo dealership.

What holds the timing belt cover on at the bottom? It seems to be secured at the bottom near the crank on both sides. I am doing this now so a quick answer would be greatly appreciated.

I bought water pump, timing belt and tensioner. But no new idler pulley. Is this a problem?
