check engine light on 98 xc v70

Post by slammin211s »

the code is something to do with a misfire on #2 cylinder

let me enlighten you guys

My pops bought this car for 5k (blue book is close to 8k) cause the check engine light was on. The timing belt broke while the car was on, and the lady who owned it replaced the belt, but said the light has been on ever since, but sometimes goes off.

The engine is mint, we had it checked out by a mechanic and there doesnt seem to be anything wrong with it or any bent valves cause of the tbelt. Its got 154000 miles on it.

We did a full tune up figuring it might be plugs and wires, and we still got this problem

We got it to stay off luckily long enough to pass CA smog (they wont pass you if the lights on) but i was wondering what i need to do to get it to stay off.

And please no "take the bulb out of the cluster" wisecracks :lol: (i dont know how you volvo guys roll, but i love hondas and post on a lot of honda related boards and it always seems like someones gotta say that when the lights on)

there is no way the valves survived a broken timing belt. Check the compression on cylinder #2 and you'll find out that the valve is slightly bent and it is not closing tight. Probably someone told the seller the same story and decided to sell the vehicle.
Good luck

well in that case what should we do ... just keep drivin it till it dies then put in a new engine? Or can this one be saved?

I agree with the second poster up above. If the timing belt broke, you'd have to replace most of the valves or just drop a new head on at the very minimum. Maybe the lady doesn't know the difference b/t the auxiliary belt and the t-belt? Is the misfire code the only one that's stored? I'd do compression and leak-down; see what comes back.

Misfire in one of the cylinders could be as simple as a bad wire or bad spark plug. If never been done, I would consider changing wires/rotors and plugs anyway at those miles. To do a check, pull the plug out of #2 cylinder (that's the second one from the timing belt side) and take a look at it. Compare it to #1 and #3 and see how different it looks.

I know everyone considers a possible bent valve in #2, but I disagree. If there truly was a timing belt break, even the least amount of damage would be other bent valves. A Volvo engine wouldn't survive with just one of them being bent...Just my $.02, and that's why I suspect faulty electricals to that cylinder.
