S70 2000; failed and was replaced at 65,000 miles during the time of the recall, is again failing at just ~60,000 miles since replacement. Is this normal? Seems to me they may not have fixed the problem to begin with...Anyone else hearing problems with this?

Nothing TO fix, they fail.
They can fail at 40K or as long as 135K

My original was still strong at 150,000 miles, but I decided to swap it out for an XeMODeX unit (remanufactured unit does not fail like originals) as preventative maintenance.

This is probably one of the biggest mistakes Volvo ever made...

I remember the original ETMs were from an italian manufacturer and almost always failed, even after the cleaning attempt. I believe they did extend the coverage on affected vehicles to 10 years/200k miles. Might be worth a phone call to the dealership.

Exactly the reason why I told Volvo that I would never buy another one. Replacing a wear/tear item with another one shows me that Volvo opted to bypass the right and safe thing to do: Coming up with a PERMANENT fix. When I had my 2001 V70 and learned about this issue, I wouldn't let my family drive in it. I loved my vehicle, but unfortunately Volvo management proved to me that $ was more important to them rather than fixing the issue at hand, bye bye V70. Shame on them and yes other car companies are not better, but in this case it is so evident.

No; the replacements are the same design too.

If you're out of warranty, you can go the Xemodex option that uses components that won't fail.

Don't scare everyone, the 02s and newer are a different design and manufacturer
The 99-01 were made by Magnetti-Marelli

The early 1969-1971 Daytonas had an MM ignition, failed with alarming regularity
In 1972 they switched to smaller Bosch units, they never failed
