First time a whole tank was spent on highway driving, mostly 70-80mph on interstate plus a run up to 8000 feet (Lake Tahoe) and back down: 457miles on 16.3 gal = 27.7mpg. I'm very impressed, not bad for a car with 215k miles.zanzabar wrote:21mpg on a 1994 NA 850 5spd in just about the worst conditions possible (90% driving around town, short trips, mostly cold starts, etc). 24.5mpg on the tank where I actually drove 100 out of 300 total miles on the highway, so I'm sure my car is capable of 25-30 on highway driving.

So - Any tips on how to get mine from the miserable 17mpg I have right now to the mid-20s? I am planning a tuneup, but there may be other repairs that interfere with that plan (we'll see).
Any tips you volvo experts can share will be appreciated.

Tire pressures and driving style/patterns are the first two to take a look at. Oh, and take the skiis off the roof as well!

I drive my 97 850 NA about 240 miles a dayto and from work. It has 127000 miles and cluster mpg readout says I'm averaging between 28 and 30mpg, which seems pretty accurate if i calculate it out manually. Mostly interstate commuting and averaging around 70-75mph.

I noticed this past winter that the my 01 V70 T5 heater was not putting out much heat. Replaced the thermostat and my MPG went from 16-17mpg city to 19mpg, something to think about.

Hypermiling in my stock v70, NA, 5 speed on a hilly 33 mile commute to work w/20 stoplights, and no speedlimit over 50 mph I am getting just over 27 mpg per tank. I recently switched to Mobil 1 0W30, from Mobil 1 10W30 and have added a new set of General Altimax HP tires (which some have commented reduce mileage). I haven't taken an average with the Generals and 0W30 but my tricks for 27 mpg in town involve upshifting at around 2,000 rpm and coasting whenever possible, plus generally keeping the revs below about 2,200 max.

I get around 24.8 to 25.7 mpg average in combined city and highway driving. I usually go well over 400 miles on a tank. I drive in a little more spirited manner as well... not like a pissed-off teenager mind you, but in a spirited manner. It's hard not to with a turbo on tap.
