You're 100% right. I was initially getting great gas mileage for a couple weeks Not sure what's happening now, but i'm getting about 220 per tank again.. Most of my driving is going back and forth to work basically about 12 miles daily.
I really liked how you justified the costs for upgrading to some new O2 sensors.

My 960 with B6304S had original O2 sensor in it at 105K and it returned poor economy of 12-14mpg. After a change of the one O2 sensor fitted and some injector cleaner I noted increase in mileage and around 17-19mpg (still far from ideal)
The three wire O2 sensors are rated by Bosch at even lower mileage than the four wire ones.
I now have the head off and the carbon build up on the pistons required some work to remove. Was the O2 sensor to blame?? Who knows.
All I know is it was running very rich for a very long time.
When I re-assemble it I'll run some more figures without the carbon also with a new air cleaner.

Can't find a listing for this one at Amazon or any of the other sites. Is the number right? Looking for rear OEM for 03 xc90.

I notice that you were not using premium fuel all along? That changes your mileage as well I suggest always filling it with premium for best economy.

No, Your Xc90 can take 87,89,and 93. The XC90 has an antiknock sensor. But the Volvo xc90 calls for 91, so what I do is put half 89,and half 93 and i get good mileage. When you put the lower grade gas in you get worse gas mileage.
Look in your owners manual at fueling.

Lets say it get at least the same.
fuel is now $3.50 87 and $3.75 for 91
$3.50 gal / 20.4mpg = $0.17 per mile
to get to $0.17 per mile car has do get a average of 2 more miles per gallon
$3.75 gal / 22.4mpg = $0.17 per mile
Do i think that is attainable? Dont know until the next road trip.
