Hey JRL, ever peel off dealer stickers?

I want to take off my '04 V70 R's ugly dealer decal. It's fading and ugly. I'm wondering if you have any secrets.

I noticed a dealer decal (or badge?) on the XC70 you have posted in the for sale subforum. Wondering if you take those off before you sell the cars, and how.

Hey Matt,

I used to remove those all the time off trade ins when I worked for Toyota. I always used a heatgun and a razor blade, sounds really scary but I was able to get them off with no scratches.

A less intimidating way would be to heat it up then use your finger nails. If the metal surface gets to hot to the touch you risk damaging your paint, so don't heat it up excessively. By the way I was in Denver this past weekend, didn't get a chance to drop by though, did enjoy your 17" of fresh powder at Copper however!

Heat gun or hair dryer yes,
Razor blade!!! That's just asking for trouble, one slip and you scratch the paint, so that would be a big NO!
You can buy PLASTIC razor blades, (most body shops have them, stop by and ask for one)
Usually a hair dryer and fingernails will get all but the most stubborn decals off quite easily

JRL and Jesse, thanks. I'll use a hair dryer and fingernails. If it takes more than that, I guess I'll cross that bridge when I get to it.

I can't believe dealers have gotten away with putting their advertising on $20k, $30k, $40k products they sell, for decades. If I ever buy a new car (never have, neither have I leased a new car), part of the contract will surely state no dealer decal or badge, thank you.

After getting it off, it might leave a sticky residue on your paint. A little bit of Paint thinner, or Varsol will clean that off.

WD-40 works for me! Works well with road tar and other adhesives from window stickers, etc.

I've had good luck with 3M General Purpose Adhesive Remover (08987). Comes in an aerosol can and I'm pretty sure most parts stores would carry it.

I think it's mostly toluene and benzene though, so regular old paint thinner might do just as well for less...
