New to family - 2000 S80

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

New to family - 2000 S80

Post by dwmoss »

Hello to this seeming wonderful forum.

My stepson just received his father's 2000 Volvo S80 (non turbo) with about 230,000 miles.

I'm interested in fixing some of the issues and working on the vehicle. I've been used to work for the past 10 years on Subaru's, so the Volvo's are new to me. This would be the reason I've joined this site.

It seems like a really nice vehicle, but I do have a few questions.

1. Is there a VIN decoder on this site or a link that would help me determine which model engine this s80 has?
2. I'm interested in purchasing something like a factory service manual for this vehcile. Anyone have any recommendations or reviews of the CD's available thorugh ebay? I believe I'm interested
3. Are the 2000 S80's obd-2 compliant? I have a check engine light on the dash and would like to determine the cause.
4. I believe there is a leak in the brake booster or line, hissing noise when the brakes are released. Looking for the manual above to help track down this problem as well.

I don't currently have an image of the volvo, but here a picture of the Subaru's in the meantime.

Thanks in advance, and looking to learn more about the Volvo's.

Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.

1. Go here to find that info.
2. A factory service manual will probably cost more than the car is worth. For the S80 and the other later Volvos I can recommend VADIS (Volvo Aftersales Diagnostics and Information Service) which is available on eBay. It has a good repair section for the later cars. Check the prices on the eBay UK site as they have been lower than the US site for some time. Most UK sellers will ship to the US.
3. They are OBD 2 compliant. The data link connector is below the left side of the dash.
4. VADIS will help.

Good looking Subarus.

Bill,

Thanks for the help. The factory service manuals for Subaru is similarly extremely overpriced as well. They do offer an online 72 hr subscription for a reasonable price. I will look into the VADIS I'm assuming it would have much more techincal detail then something like a Haynes.

Again I appreciate the help.

All the Best,

Dave

Welcome, dm. This should help: What is Vadis? It's an overview and introduction.
Help keep MVS on the web -> click sponsors' links here on MVS when you buy from them.

Also -> Amazon link
. Click that when you go to buy something on Amazon and MVS gets a cut!

You guys are making this too easy on me all I have to do is click links!!

I was reading up on the VADIS before joining the forum, but my memory was that it might be out of my price range.

Looks like I have some clicking and searching to do.

The ebay uk tip seems to be significantly cheaper even with shipping across the pond.

I'm eyeing a 2006 vadis which should be good for me correct, since I'm only needing information for the 2000 s80?

That is the VADIS you need as it was the last to be used. Volvo now use a system called VIDA.

Ordered VADIS through ebay.uk today, thanks again for the tip.

Question for everyone. My step son's father has been swapping tires (winter to summer to winter) on the same set of rims. I'm interested in finding a additional set of wheels for the summer tires.

Is there a recommended "inexpensive" path forward to do this? I'll spend some time searching here in this forum, but I thought there might be a recommended aftermarket or used stock wheel selection someone has already gone through.

thanks in advance

dave

ps I still owe you guys an image of the rocking silver 2000 s80.

Try our sponsor, Erie Vo-Vo, link at the top of the forum or a breaker's yard.
