Volvo Repair Database Fuel Pressure problem

Post by Dave Cook »

I was driving to work on Thursday and my 1996 850GLT (170,000 miles), which has always ran great, sputtered to a stop. It would turn over every time I started it but I could only go about 30 feet before it died again. I was about 50 miles form home and right across the street from a little hokey shop that I've bought tires from but never thought I would ever have any real work done there. They changed the fuel filter to no avail. They're telling me it's a sensor of some sort but still haven't fixed it. I'm worried that they can't handle it and I'll end up having to get it towed back home.

Any thoughts?

How do you break loose the large plastic nut to remove the fuel pump. I tried using something like a chisel but it just broke off one of the plastic tines.

Thanks, Alan. I was hoping I wouldn't have to buy a specil tool. Anybody else come up with a way to break this nut loose?

I decided to make my own tool..I used an adjustable wrench to loosen/tighten. Works fine but obviously I can't torque to the specified setting. I used the old gasket and it doesn't leak..

Hi ... I tried making my own tool (without success) ... in the end I just used the wheel brace (which has a red plastic coating on the sharp end) to lever it in an anti-clockwise direction. Worked great!

Today i changed my fuel pump on my 850 93, i took an oil filter wrench
(ajustable you put a 3/8 ratchet on it). It worked great.

I am planning on replacing a fuel pump on a 1993 850 series volvo, I am pretty handy with doing mechanic work that isn't a problem but, i have never replaced a fuel pump before. Can anyone tell me before I tackle this project what tools are needed? And what will I be encountering?

Thanks for your replies...

Great info here, but no one has really helped Dave Cook, the original poster. To him, I say, get your codes read. I suspect that it could be the MAF sensor....or even the fuel pump relay. Anyway, the codes will give you more info to go on.
