850 Dash Cover Removal

Post by jdsmith »

I am trying to remove my 1997 850 dashboard cover. Before starting, I read the tutorials and disconnected the negative battery terminal. I removed the air vents, the grommets on the dash sides and removed all the torx screws, including the two at the top of the instrument cluster, two that are in the glove box cavity, the ones that are on both sides of the dash, and one that is under the passenger side speaker grill. I also removed four bolts in the glove box cavity that attach to the airbag unit. A diagram I found on the web indicated that there are supposed to be therr torx screws in the glove box cavity, but I only found two.

Having done all this, I can lift out and up the driver's side. But I cannot lift out and up the passenger's side. When I try to lift the passenger's side, it looks and feels like something is still holding it down (another screw?) - the framing around the glove box cavity moves with it like it is still attached. Does anyone have any suggestions?

I believe there are a couple behind the glove box, once you pull the glove out, there should be four torx screws in there. Also, I believe there is on one the side when you open the passenger door.

I did pull the glove box and found two torx screws in the cavity at the opening. A diagram I found on the Web from volvocars indicated that there are three. I can't find the third one. I did remove the two on the passenger door side as you indicated. I will look for more inside the cavity behind the glove box. Many thanks.

If you are trying to completely remove the cap you really need to remove the nuts that hold the passenger's side air bag to the frame. They are directly above the glove box and there are several of them. Remove the cap along with the air bag. They should come out apart but I could never get any of mine to work that way. The only other thing holding the air bag to the rest of the dash is the electrical connector, make sure you plug it back in before you hook the battery back up.
