2001 Volvo S40 turbo dies 10seconds after cold start

Post by atmfromchico »

My 2001 Volvo S40 Turbo has about 105,000 miles on it. Rebuilt turbo from about four months ago, and we put on about 2,500 miles a year. Recently when you start the car it hesitates and dies after about 10-20 seconds. If you hit the gas it will keep going (somewhat roughly) for about a minute, then smooths out and runs normally. I you don't, it dies. I'm trying to figure out if it is the fuel filter, the fuel injection, the fuel pump, or something else completely. Any advice would be great. Thanks.

When was the last time a good tune-up was performed? Sounds like it could be fuel, but it also sounds like possible ETM (electronic throttle module) issues. Do you know if you've had the throttle module replaced?

So, does it start up fine, and then only after 10-20 seconds give you trouble? Could also be a MAF (mass airflow sensor) on its way out.

Check battery. If battery is marginal then when you crank the engine over the starter electrical load will lower battery voltage and the ECM can lose its fuel trim adjustments and cause the stumbles.
The other thing that comes to mind is coolant temp sensor failing.
Cracked or disconnected vacuum lines or hole or cracks in intercooler-turbo-throttle hoses could be an issue.
No ETM on this car so that would not be an issue.
10-20 seconds is long enough for enrichment period to be fading away and the memorized fuel trim adjustments becomes important at that time.
Many of the chain parts stores and Sears Auto Centers will check battery condition for no charge.

I though the ETM issue affected all models from 99 to 02.

Anyway, that's all good stuff to check too. Battery issues can cause a lot of funny things to happen to these cars.

My S40 was getting harder and harder to start (had to "crank it" for 5 - 8+ seconds to get it started) and then it ran roughly for the first minute or so. It would try to stall if you did not give it gas. I replaced the Fuel Pressure Regulator over the weekend and that fixed the problem. When I looked at the old FPR the diaphragm was shot and was apparantly letting in too much fuel and flooding the engine. Once the excess fuel burned off the car ran fine.

The 4 cylinder S40/V40 models never got the electronic throttle like all the other North American models.

Hello I have a 2002 s40 and its doing the same thing?? Ive replaced both the thermastat and the ect. I also recently gave it a tune up but the code 0115 keeps coming back... any ideas? It starts and runs rough for a 1 min or so and then smoothes out. The temp gauge stays on the cool side pretty much all the time?
