While driving down our gravel road yesterday I heard a rattling sound from the front right side. I found that the very bottom rung of the spring had broken in half and was freely bouncing. I removed one half of that rung, but the other half is still there.
Since I've only owned this car for a few months, I decided to check the left-front spring. Yes, the same thing happened on the left side, only half of the bottom rung is left.
Is this normal? Is it dangerous?
Front Springs; dangerous?

You need new front springs NOW!!!
This is not uncommon with XCs and especially 01s and 02s with miles.
Please do not drive this way, it's quite dangerous, you have no real control

I have a 2006 S60 T5 with 50073 miles. I drive on regular roads but where I live they can be fairly bumpy. I have a loud popping noise when I go over bumps and sometimes when turning. I can hear it on both sides of the car but mainly on the drivers side. I understand this could be several issues but the spring seats seem to be the most likely. The car does not seem to be affected while steering, it may have a very very minor loss of response when turning right, hard to be sure.
If I take this to a local mechanic and purchase an OEM part should I get the part for the S60 or another model of Volvo?
How much should I expect to pay for parts and labor?

I have a 2000 V40 that I bought Aug 01' with 18k miles on it. In 05' with 55k on it I parked the car and ran into the store (I had just been on the highway at 55 mph with no pot holes or such). I slipped the key upon returning and turned on the car. At the same time there was a loud noise, a louder "pop" which sounded like a gunshot and then the front end dropped hard down onto the curb my front tires were parked against. It turns out that the spring on the passenger side of the car had broken and speared my tire! This is just one of the many things that hae gone wrong with this car. I promised my husband if he bought me this car I would drive it 10 years before getting another. Well it is almost August 2011!
We check the springs each year. It could have been VERY bad f I was on the highway at the time.
