I am baffled trying to locate a whining noise which sounds like its coming from under/behind rubber intake seals and is especially prominant when I listen with hollow plastic tube to my ear on the intake area passenger side. It sounds like an air/vacuum leak. When the engine is turned off, the whining trails off for 1 second after engine has stopped until it depressurizes. I tried cleaning metal surface where plastic intake sealing rings mate and putting microfilm of permatex adhesive sealer on upper rubber intake seals and re-tighten. The whining sound seemed to minimize but after it warmed up the same noise so now I don't think it's from the intake seals. The check engine light also came on. The volvo parts guy said I should consider the oil trap. Where is this located? Could this be the culprit? What's the fix? I need to use the car asap.
Thank you for your assistance.

This car should still be under the factory warranty. If it isn't, then there is an extended warranty for the oil trap, which makes a noise very similar to the one you are describing. The oil trap and oil filter housing are one unit on the S40/V50. It should be covered at no charge to you.
In an effort not to post a redundant thread on here i'm going to pose my question to you guys.
I am having an issue with oil leaking out the top of my engine. I originally thought it might be the oil cap seal that was busted and leaking oil, but i don't think it is. I was told that the PCV system could be clogged and need to be cleaned. So, today i had to take my car in anyways to get a different issue looked at. I had the mechanic look at this problem and he told me 1: that my car does not have a pcv system and that 2: the oil trap needs to be replaced. He said that he wants to put a dye in the oil to see where it's leaking from and then in a week, for me to come back and they can tell where it's leaking from. Now, i'm just trying to make sure that i don't get ripped off for an unnecessary $700 job. Any thoughts? Can i just clean out the oil trap myself or is there more to it?

Is this still covered under warranty? I have an 06 S40 2.4l that just started doing this today. What is the camp num I'd give to the dealer?
