OBD II & ABS TRACS Light

My ABS & Tracs lights came on & I have some intermittent grinding sounds (feels like it's coming from the front) while braking. Will that throw any codes and would a OBD II scanner read those?

Nope, a standard scan tool won't read them.

I would attempt to clean up your wheel sensors and reluctance rings on the axles; it sounds like the ABS system thinks a wheel is slipping when it's not. An old toothbrush and solvent like Simple Green or something works well for this.

I cleaned the rear sensors and will be doing the front tomorrow when I replace my pads. Hopefully that clears it up. Thanks.

If after the cleaning, the lights are still lit, you will need to get the codes read because then we will have to start replacing parts. No need just throwing parts at the system. Good luck.

So how do I get the codes read if a standard OBD II won't do? Volvo shop I assume.

It sounds like your abs module is cracked. My OBDII read those exact codes fine, the noise you hearing does it sound like your in 3rd gear and its slowing you down as if your brakes are on?

Known issue with the ABS module.

On the topic of brakes related to your post, I had similar issue with ABS/TRACS lights coming but not really any noise but you could feel resistance like the brakes were on. It turned out my front calipers were frozen, the car did some sitting and previuos owner did not care for her...good thing he was second owner for only 3 months. I knew it was the brakes but wasn't sure exactley how much needed to be done, so I brought it to my inspection shop and they told me the front calipers were fronzen.

Thanks for the responses. I thought the ABS might be needing a repair. What I think is going on is the front brakes are very close to if not metal on metal and this gives me the grinding sound then my brakes overheat causing the lights to come on. This has happened before. I'm about to go change my pads and inspect the calipers & rotors.
