Warning light madness followed by a dead battery!

Post by XC90NEV »

I've just had the flexi plate and starter replaced as well as a full srvice and cam belt replacement, however 2 days latter, after a short journey the car wouldnt start again. We jumped it but half a mile later the warning lights went crazy the car lost power and died.

The tow truck got it home using a battery pack but suspected the alternator - garage have since replaced the battery and tested alternator and no sign of a power drain.

Cutting a long story short - am now on brake down number 3 where the same thing has happened with the warning lights (Anti skid, ABS, yellow then red triangles, air bags...) going on and off for a while then the car loosing power and dying. To get it going i've had to remove the battery and charge for a short whils and it gets it home!

I had no electrical problems whatsoever before the flexi plate job, so am thinking somthing wasnt reconected properly when they put the engine back in..

Any suggestions welcomed!

The small gauge wire on alternator is used as exciter supply, warning lamp operation, and on the 05 and later it is communication about variable voltage level charging.
If that wire is not connected it will charge at times and not at others. When the voltage goes low the warning lamps come on progressively as the various systems reach their low voltage shutdown voltage level which aren't all the same.
