Hello all; I have a 1998 2.4L V70. While working under the hood last night I noticed that I have a (1) black and (1) white very small in diameter vacuum line coming from the back side of my air box. Here is the problem....the black line is only connected at the airbox and is disconnected at the other end. I have looked and looked and can not see where it is supposed to go. The bend in the line leads me to believe it goes towards the front soemwhere under the distributor....any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

There's a small vacuum tree right by the throttle body. You probably have to remove the black plastic piece with a screw on top to see it. It connects to one of the ports there.

jblackburn-I just looked...two problems with that.
1. of the two nipples there, the white line is connected to one of them and the other one has a rubber cap over it.
2.the line is about 6 inches to short to go there.
I know your a great mechanic because I have seen (on this sight) how many people you have helped and how many times you were right while others were wrong, so I hate to ask but, is there anywhere else it could go?

Oh, I'm wrong all the time. Hope this one helps.
The white vac line runs from the back of the airbox to the vacuum tree
The black line runs from the back of the airbox to the front of it at the bottom (where the air intake from the grill attaches to the airbox, just above the intake port) - it controls the airbox hot/cold flap which is vacuum actuated in later model 850's and S70's

No problem 
In the older models the thermostat would fail and jam itself to the hot air side. That would both rob you of power and gas mileage that your engine would be capable of with cold air entering the cylinders.

Hello, I have a 1998 S70 non turbo with an engine light on, 200k this week. Dealer said to replace both oxygen sensors, $450 each. I noticed the black and white vacum hose mention above on th eair box were broken and dried out.
Could this cause a engine light?
I have already replaced that elbow next to power steering pump, turned light off last year. Also replaced the vac line near the radiator.
On a side note, my dealer could noy find ANY documentation on these 2 hoses, needed to come out to my car and look. Still no parts, elbows, matched.
Any thoughts are appreciated. Can I replace with just normal vac tube instead of trying to find elbows?

That is insane.Dealer said to replace both oxygen sensors, $450 each.
You do have options on the vacuum lines but the one that always fails is the one on the front end of the intake manifold and that code is always misinterpreted as a bad oxygen sensor. That particular line has a sharp bend in a tight space so a molded vacuum line is preferable. It is a real bear to get to. In my case my diminutive daughter, who is a great mechanic in her own right, was able to get the line back on and start the zip tie to secure it.
