2005 VOLVO S40 2.4i "engine system service required"
I have a 2005 Volvo S40 2.4i which has been giving me mechanical problems since I bought it in 2005. The persistant problem is the "emission system" light which comes on and off all the time since may 2007. It was reset over and over again until a solenoid was replaced as a solution. The light is on again since few weeks ago and an "engine system service required" message is displayed everytime I start the car and the emission system light will be on until I switch off the engine. I am tired of repairing the same problem over and over again through a volvo dealer. What can be the cause of this problem and is there any permanent solution? Can the problem affect the efficiency and performance of the car?
This reply may not help you at all, lol, since you posted so long ago but i also just had this message come up on my 05 s40 2.4i. I did some googleing of the problem and read a bunch of different forums. It doesn't seem to be linked to any 1 issue. It's kind of like a check engine light in where its a generalized warning light. However, i did manage to turn mine off. But keep in mind that I also had a check engine light on, and my engine was running a little rough, so i had multiple reasons to do what i did.
Recently I had to have my Oil trap replaced along with the hoses that led to it. Because of that issue I had oil leaking out on to the top of my engine block. After the shop replaced my oil trap they didn't really do anything about any of the oil on the top of the engine. So, once this light turned on i remembered that there was still oil on the top and that i should clean it all off in hopes of fixing this problem. So i took off the plastic pieces covering the area with the ignition coils and such. i disconnected all of the wires leading to the ignition coils. Then i took off all of the ignition coils and boots. I worked on those first.
Since i had a problem with oil on the top of my engine there was some oil in the boot, and on the ignition coils. I used a degreaser to remove all of the oil and i bought a CRC Electronic Cleaner to clean off all of the contacts since i thought there might be some oil that got in there. I then sprayed the ends of the ignition coils in case any oil got in there. I also used the electric cleaner on female part of the connector that is attached to the car. I cleaned off all of the oil that was on the top of the engine, and made sure that there wasn't any still inside by the spark plug.
Once it was all clean i put it all back together. At the time my engine was running a little rough, so i decided to also clean off the MAF sensor. I knew that the CRC Electronic Cleaner that i had left behind a little bit of residue, so instead i used my brake cleaner. Works perfectly fine. Now, the Engine System Service Required light turned off and my engine doesn't run rough anymore. Hope this helps.
