2008 S40 T5 clunking steering column around turns...

Post by bobo2196 »

Hey all,

I have a 2008 S40 T5, very well cared for all it's life, 57,000 miles, dealer serviced, etc.. Ever since I could remember, I would hear this clunking noise coming from what sounded like the steering column. This noise is fairly consistent and the severity depends on what kind of road surface I am on. Going straight down the road, wheel centered, I could drive down the worst rippled gravel road you've ever seen and hear no noise. Go over potholes or bumps with the wheel turned in either direction and the clunking comes back. On smooth pavement, no problem. On rough roads, potholes, etc... anything other than a perfectly smooth road, around turns ONLY, I hear this clunking. It feels like its coming from right up inside the column almost, or near my feet, and you can FEEL it in your hands.

Osteen Volvo in Jacksonville Florida tore the entire dash out and everything looking for this noise and never found it, Winter Park Volvo in Orlando couldnt find it either, although I demonstrated the noise for both of them.. Im just about at wits end, any ideas?
