Well, the car's not going anywhere. Neither am I. One way or another, it will live on! It's been a great car, and is physically in great shape inside and out. Jimmy, that's what I was thinking too; I will take a look at the wiring and TCU this afternoon when I get home.

If it comes down to it, I will pull the transmission out myself - I have done it once before, and it was a huge pain in my butt (and back), but I'm not paying upwards of $1000 for it to be done by somebody else.

I've been thinking of giving it to my dad anyway so that he can give my 16-yr old brother his Jeep. If it comes down to it, I'll get my new car (likely a Honda Civic; I'm looking for a 2004 or 2005 EX 4-door stick shift model - if you see one around you, on this side of the country, PLEASE let me know - they're few and far between!) and work on this car in my spare time. I had my hands on one last week, but was undecided, and it's sold already.

For the time being, my friend says I can borrow her car (ugh, a Neon) for the next few weeks if I need it.

Oh, and I won't be getting another Volvo. I love my car to death; it's essentially part of my family, but I wouldn't do it again. I have a history of high-maintenance women in my life, and little Carlene the Volvo's no exception

But, I mean, how could you ever bring yourself to hate that awesome body?

What that guy above me said. It's because "ack" comes just a few letters later!

Good luck, too. Could always try to find a used transmission, if you wanted to gamble a bit.

Like Dad wants your car

I was looking around on a few sites, and came across a similar problem- it turned out to be solenoids.
Butttttt judging by the big clunk, and the 194? k miles you have on her.....I dunno if it's more serious than that or not.
Apparently its more cost effective to just throw in a used tranny instead of replace the solenoids.....I wonder if we could pick one up at LKQ the next time you're home. Apparently they run $150 or so.
I read something about the winter button kicking it into 2nd gear...have you fiddled with those?

I can buy GUARANTEED trannies from Erie for far less than you can and have it drop shipped if necessary
You pay a couple of hundred moe from Erie but the LIFETIME guarantee is worth it
The last 4 speed I bought was about $590 delivered! (and was/is fine).

(and yes, the 4 speeds can go belly up, "just like that"!
