Easy exhaust drone elimination

How to go faster, stop quicker, and turn harder. Chips, exhaust, larger turbos, bigger/slotted/drilled rotors, high performance brake pads, manual boost controllers, performance shocks/struts/springs, airbox mods and more! Also discussion on HID and Xenon lights, aftermarket foglights and other exterior lighting.

Easy exhaust drone elimination

Post by georgeleedom »

As soon as I added a 3"dp to my S70, I began an expensive and time-consuming period of trial and error trying to get a good exhaust tone. After several combinations of mufflers, tips and resonators, I settled on a 3" Borla XR-1 and a 9.5" resonator. The tone is great - borderline V-8, but I still had that awful drone; especially while cruising between 2500 and 3k rpm.

I have no room left to add another resonator and wasn't sure it would do much, but a mechanic friend gave me a great (and inexpensive solution). Header wrap.

I picked up a roll at my local car-part supermarket (AutoZone) for $50. I paid another $19 for the metal zip clamps, but regular radiator hose clamps would have worked fine. It takes some muscle and patience to get a good wrap on it, but I wrapped the downpipe and the difference is amazing. I still have a nice low rumble at idle and a great sound at WOT, but no more drone.

I definitely recommend this to anyone contemplating an aftermarket exhaust.

I may have to do the wrap although I'm on the stock downpipe/stock cat/2.5"eBay resonator to 2.5" piping to 2.5" magnaflow 14850 4" tip..

Same annoying drone between 2.5-3k rpms for a while now, this is exactly what I've been trying to avoid is why I stuck with a bunch of stock parts.

I have an oil leak so I'm not wrapping anytime soon...
