AC not cold after 10-15 minutes

Post by alwx »

I have a 2001 V70, my AC has always worked fine, now when I use it, it blows cold air for about 10 minutes, then the air stops being cold. If I turn the AC off for a few minutes, it will blow cold air again but only for about 10 minutes. Does anyone have an idea why it is doing this?

There are a few possibilities: 1. Compressor clutch wear has increased the air gap between the drive and driven plates and the electromagnet winding is not strong enough when it gets warmed up to pull the driven plate in once the compressor is cycled off.
Clutch gap is covered in several threads here. 2. There is an issue with expansion valve, 3. the evaporator is freezing up due to faulty or debris covered evaporator temp probe.
The last item will give reduced air flow and hot air.

Are you sure that your fan selector is not stuck in the auto mode. This will continue to adjust your temp to what you have your internal thermostat set to.

I think the clutch need to be reshimed. Print the attachment and bring it to your mechanic, it will take around $200 labor to do this.
