Very Confused on 01 V70. To Buy or Not Buy????

Post by new_owner »

Hello,
I had almost made my mind to buy a 2001 V70 with 60K miles on it for around 14Gs, when i came across this forum and read about the ETM problem volvos had. I am wondering how serious is this problem? should I give up on the v70 I described just because of that? Please let me know if you have any suggestions.

thanks,

Steely

New Owner,

We bought our '01 V70 with 49K on it. I found the Volvo Forums after the fact and learned about the ETM and ABS issues. With the recent agreement by Volvo to cover ETM's for 10 years or 200K miles, and the option to have Victor Rocha rebuild your ABS module for $130, I feel better about choosing the nicest car Ive ever owned. We've had our V70 for a year and a half and put about 20K on it, including some 600 mile trips. I'm satisfied we've got a good car. For 14G's or so it sounds like you might get one, too. I'd take it to a Volvo indy mechanic and let them go through it to indentify any potential problems. Then say your prayers and cast your bread on the waters. They ain't cheap to maintain. Good Luck!

01 was the first year for the 'P' car & like all new models, it had it's share of teething problems. My 2001 XC is a disasterous piece of work, but I also believe that it is an anomaly based on the 3 previous turbo wagons i've owned which were stellar. Everyone agrees that the 2002 is a far superior vehicle, & I think that the few extra bucks that it would cost up front, would be more than realized down the road in increased reliability & peice of mind.....don't think exclusively with your wallet on this one.

Like saltydog said it was the first model year which is generally good to avoid regardless of the make. I bought my 02 V70 used and specifically set the minimum age filter on any car site I went to at 2002. I think the reason so many deals come up on 01's is for all of the reasons posted here and elsewhere.

Even with avoiding the 01's I am in the process of getting the trans fixed. Otherwise the car has been pretty good other than a fairly healthy appetite for headlight bulbs. I really like our V70 and feel very safe in it. Recentley coming off warranty may change that, and I don't know if this car will be as good to us as our 86 740.
