It's like housing. It works on the same underlying principle: how easy is it to borrow money?

Today, it's far more difficult than it was 2 or 3 years ago. Are you middle class with a stable job? Try getting a home loan. It'll take 3x as long, they'll check 3x as many sources of information on you, and you'll probably not qualify for as much as say 2003.

I bought a house in 2003 and another in 2009. It was that big of a difference.

So what you see in buying (falling prices) is the opposite in what you see in rental properties (rising rents, lowest vacancy rate in 15 years around here).

Same with cars. Credit is tight, fewer people can buy new, so demand shifts to used.

I picked up an immaculate '06 V-70 with 46k miles back in November for $15.5 The Blue Book at the time was close to $18. Found it at a Toyota dealer and they were happy to see it leave. Gave away my '99 red V-70 to a lucky nephew. He's now a Volvo man for life.
