I'm looking at getting a car for my son. I've come across a 96 850 Platinum Edition.
What's the difference between the 850 GLT I have and the Platinum?

96 GLT is a non-turbo, the platinum is a turbo and comes with all the factory options. The platinum also has Nivomats in the back instead of regular shocks.
I've had both. I miss my NA because it didn't use much gas and kept me out of trouble. I've been pulled over a few times for speeding in the Platinum.

The biggest difference on the Platinum Edition, aside from every option available, is the three layer paint. It looks pearl white in the day but at night it turns to a brilliant platinum color in the light.
It also has the Persus wheels which were unique to the Platinum Edition.
The only true Platinum Edition cars are '96 models. I've seen a bunch of Alpine White cars being marketed as Platinum Editions but they aren't.

The paint is absolutely gorgeous. They are, besides pale yellow 850 R, the best looking 90s Volvo, in my opinion.Ozark Lee wrote:The biggest difference on the Platinum Edition, aside from every option available, is the three layer paint. I guess it's not a Platinum then - it's either blue or black!Ozark Lee wrote:The biggest difference on the Platinum Edition, aside from every option available, is the three layer paint. It looks pearl white in the day but at night it turns to a brilliant platinum color in the light.

ALL Platinums are 850 turbos
They're also pearl, hence the name

Don't think we got the Platinum model in Europe but the T5 could be ordered with Persus alloys in some markets. The Persus alloys were 16' but you can fit the larger brakes from early V/S 70's. I wonder how many Platinums were sold in the US, could be rarer than an 'R'.

I have owned two Platinum wagons for ten years...still have them...in my opinion, they are the pinnacle of pre Ford volvo products, and I love them. They are starting to show their 15 years of age, but I would not hesitate to take either one of them on a west coast jaunt right now. They both are pretty much loaded with all of Volvos 1996 options, except one has roof racks and the other does not. I also have a 97 Turbo sedan 850, and it is similar in most ways, including Persus wheels, just not quite so fully equipped with options.
