AWD Drivetrain pictures?

Post by Cactuslegs »

Does anyone have a picture of the drivetrain on one of the AWD models? I'm trying to see how it is set up. What I'm trying to do is turn my c70 manual into an AWD, what are your thoughts on this? Seem possible?

Oh yeah, its a 2000.

This guy did it with his 850 and I know they are very similar inside, but I just thought it'd be awesome to have an AWD, but I'm not sure if it will work out so well with the manual transmission...

Have to add a different transmission (sometimes), a bevel gear, a center shaft and support, a center diff , a read diff, both rear axles and change hub bearings if needed. This is for the old system. With the new one you will need heaps of electronics. Basically replacing the cars computers with those from an AWD including the computers needed to engage/disengage the AWD coupling.

They made a s70 awd. Unless you already have everything you need, it would be easier and probably cheaper to find one of those.

The only feasible way is to transplant the 98-2000 gen 1 complete with the WHOLE rear suspension. But you will have to be sure the upper shock attachments are there on the C70 chassis. You're going to have to used the AWD fuel tank and relocate the charcoal canister to the front left forward wheel housing.
You really need the WHOLE 2000 model year donor car as there are going to be differences in fuel pressure regulator and lines from the different model years, at least differences 98 to 99-2000.
The big deal will be to figure out if your manual trans has the AWD holes tapped and the splines to drive the cuff that attaches the angle gear to transmission.
Is the wheelbase the same for C70 and the S/V 70? IF not you will have to go with a good shop that can cut down driveshaft length and re-balance it.
You will have to use the steering gear from AWD car and transfer the front subframe. The steering gear is not used as engine mount as on FWD and the casting for engine mount has to be gone for clearance. The subframe needs to have the AWD engine mount reinforcements and holes for the mount. The transmission may have to have the holes for that mount drilled and tapped.
This is an ENORMOUS undertaking and will put your car down for days or weeks.
I have done 6 cylinder to V8 engine swaps on domestic pickups which are considered easy but you still will discover dozens of differences in things you wouldn't consider.

That's a lot to consider jimmy, thanks for all the info. I'll probably find a donor car at some point...I have no idea about the wheelbase, but I do know of a custom driveshaft place in town here, but this project is probably not going to happen for a goooood while from now. At the moment I'm just playing with the idea and doing research. I'm am pretty determined to make this happen though, all the stuff you mentioned is a lot, but I think it's possible as long as the manual has the fittings needed.

Wow, thanks for that PDF JDS60, really informative and helpful! This site is amazing.

I just ran into this manual transmission on ebay for the c70 and it lists towards the bottom all the cars it fits into, and the v70 AWD is included in that list....hmmm, interesting. Of course, I'm not sure how accurate that is, but still.

Bah, apparently the only AWD model in that year that has the same wheelbase is the v70R, which I probably will not find one of those to be a donor LOL.

s70 AWD - 104.5 in.
c70 HPT coupe - 104.9 in.
v70 XC - 104.3 in.
v70-R AWD - 104.9 in.
