What Im trying to show in the pic is two things. 1. The notches in the cover at 12 o'clock are spaced wider than the notches in the cams when they are at 12 o'clock. If you set the cams according to the notches you may get what the top drawing depicts the equivalent of 1/2 notch out each side or what is more likely a full notch out on the exhaust side. 2. set your cams notches to the inside edges of the cover notches and they will look like the bottom drawing. When you look at it from the perspective of the coolant tank, you will percieve the cam setting to be too 'narrow' but remove surrounding cover put a laser level on the cam it will point to the center axis when plumb.
My takeaway is this, when thinking about doing a timing belt job and you look at others pics Vadis, haynes etc, they all say or look like the cam marks line up with notches. This will put exhaust cam mark just before 12 o'clock and intake just after.
This was my first engine swap ever, I had a good donor engine and receiving transmission. a good engine hoist is a must. patience with the turbo repositioning. If you do this without removing tranny there is one bolt that must go in the bottom at time of bell housing positioning before any others.
Time for some 3309ATF a dual exhaust setup and 4 NEW tires.
