v70 transmission question

Post by v70guy »

I have a 2000 V70, FWD that has the AW55-50sn tranny. apparently dex/mercon was used instead of the specialty fluid and so, 1 tranny lunched. I came across a trans # AW50-42LE and when I went to do the swap today, i found that the donor trans doesnt have the little 8-10 wire pigtale connector that's to the right of the main transmission plug/harness. now, I learned that the donor trans is a 4sp whereas the one in the car is a 5. (its actually my dad's car and he's cheap). he wants to put the trans in regardless if the wiring doesnt match up or the # of forward speeds is off  whatever the case, would it be possible for this swap to take place and if so, what do you ppl think will NOT function/happen when this extra pigtail doesn't get plugged in when the junk trans is installed?
Can I possibly swap some of this wiring over to the new junk tranny? :?
the car's been sitting literally for YEARS and he's had this tranny for months. i started the swap not knowing ANY of the above regarding part #'s, and such, so thanx mat's volvo site for the info!!!

No way to make this work. The 5 speed has double the solenoids and shifts using a completely different strategy. The trans computer ( TCM) can't be swapped between a 99 that uses 4 speed with non-turbo and the 2000 as some component differences make for software differences and there is no software fix to make the 4 speed fit where a 5 speed lived.
You could get a book and learn to overhaul the 5 speed..........
The transmission will not do much but stay in 3rd gear and burn up if it is not connected to a compatible working TCM, a TCM that can talk the to the ECM.
I wish I had good news.............

TY!!!!! now just gotta show my cheap dad this post :( either way, tranny's coming out tomorrow and basically I'd like to if there are any "special tools" required to do so-(don't want any suprises, you know). I can get a socket for the axle nut(what size is it?), but besides that, I'm not sure what I'll need.
I've removed plenty of trannys before, just never a 2000 volvo v70.
thanx!!!

Good luck
What's the rush?
You don't have the right tranny to put back in.
And seriously, don't try this, IT WILL NOT WORK

im NOT going to attempt the swap- its just that my dad wants the tranny out at least so, well he wants the tranny out:(
i agree 100% about the stupidity of even making such an attempt, i only wanted to confirm what i already suspected. to be honest, im suprised the car started up and ran because the car is literally a rats' nest-it was sitting in a field the last 2-3 years. rat poo everywhere and im suprised that no wires are chewed up!!! (interior smells funny, though) anyways, HE's the one in a rush so really, all i need to kno is exactly what size the axle nut is so i can be prepared. im actually removing the trans near the field it was at, so basicaly its gonna be hand tools n grunt work. is an engine hoist absolutely necessary, can i be lazy and leave the axles in the hubs n just undo the LCA's? mind u, i have the tools, but im forced to do it shade tree style cuz of where the car is at:
in dirt,on a hill, literally under a shade treeLOL.

Well good luck with this
I forget the size but the axle nut is a big one!
Buy a lot of PB Blaster, you're going to need it
