hey thanks a million andy86+volvo! I'm going to try and work out tomorrow why my vacuum tree is empty, but I'm sure my fuel pressure regulator is connected to something, there must be another different connections for the S70, but I'll find out tomorrow... thanks again!

You might want to search the site and look for the proper one for your car before routing it like mine since I'm not sure of how your particular setup is supposed to be. And good luck with it.
Thanks to all, and especially Andy! There are some differences in the years as far as vacuum hoses on the 850. I am gonna take pics with discriptions to follow up. It seems that once the hose goes into the vacuum tree it doesnt matter where it goes or comes from. I did the leak check with carb cleaner and never heard any kind of rev to the engine. I did take all the lines off and the engine took a nose dive but still ran, and as I put them all back on it got very smooth. One for sure made a difference. The line from the forward side of the tree to the check valve to the solenoid valve wasnt leaking as I could tell but the hose was very worn so I replaced it. The engine seems to be running really good, I need to put some miles on it before I declare it as perfect, but so far so good.
I also wanted to add that my decal on the underside of the hood looks nothing like what is attached to the engine. I might be way out there the way I have things but I would think the diagram under the hood should be exactly as it is on the engine, and in my case its not even close. I'm gonna keep researching this but if I am right them maybe we all can get some clarifcation on this. I just cant believe there are so many different variations on the same car? Lets keep this going to see if we can all figure it out.

hmmm... interesting, had a quick look at the car today and I can't find my fuel pressure regulator, had a quick search on fcp website for one just to see if there is such thing on a 97 S70, and the item's description says "This is only for models with the fuel return system"... So I take that to mean that some S70 doesn't have a fuel return system, therefore no pressure regulator... I remember reading somewhere on this forum that describes different fuel system on our cars, I think I'll have to find that post.... Thanks for the help so far, especially Andy with his photos....

da7 there was no S70 in 1997 - you must have a 98?
The fuel pressure regulator in a non-return system S70 is also sometimes called a dampener. It sits up front under the fuel rail in the same place as in the 850s, but there is no vacuum line to it. It looks like this:

You're right! The 1998 non-turbo (97 in other countries) does not have a FPR with a return line anywhere near the front - it has a regulator, but it's back by the fuel tank. '
1998 Turbos have the FPR with a return line; 1999 and later are the same as the non-turbo model.

erikv11: I can see the dampener, but what jblackburn said explains the reason why I can't see a regulator, if it's indeed located at the back... so that means I'll have at least one less vacuum connection on the vacuum tree, just have to work out what the other missing one is... also somehow we seem to have a S70 in 1997 in Australia, I noticed it when I check out parts website overseas that they only have S70 listed on 1998 onwards, but anyhow the S70 is pretty much exactly the same as earlier 850 anyway... so luckily there's not much confusion for me when ordering parts....

Aha, I didn't know that about S70's coming earlier to other countries. Nor did I realize there was a regulator in the back, thanks for the info.
The reason I know about the dampener at the rail is because I have a 98 S70 engine in my garage right now, I am halfway through an engine swap. Well, on this S70 NA engine, the vac tree had one line and 5 plugs, just like on your car. This is a low mileage, unmodified setup so I trust that this configuration is correct. So maybe your car doesn't have any vac connections missing, after all.

95 850 N/A. I need a little work on my vacuum lines. Mine is exactly like andy's pics. I have fresh hard tubing (yellow in pics) but no elbows. Anyone know what size (diam.) elbows i need? The hard tubing i got from eeuroparts but it just said volvo oem and did not give a size. Also, what is the thicker black rubber hose that runs to a nipple on the right of the manifold? It's only about a foot long and it's deteriorating fast. Anyone know exactly what this is and specs on replacing it? Thanks
