1993 Volvo 240 - tie rod

Post by blenkusha »

Hi,

I need to replace a tie rod on my 1993 240. In the Bentley manual it speaks of needing a special tool that will enable me to pull the old tie rod off without damaging anything in the process. My question is, is this tool really necessary? Does anybody have a trick they've used to replace the tie rod without this "special tool?"

One other quick thing. My driver's side windshield wiper shoots off the side of the windshield and gets stuck. I'm wondering if I need to replace the wiper motor? Has this happened to anyone?

Thanks for the help!
Andy

I assume you are speaking of an inner tie rod, yes?

I did a write up on this site for my 940. You can use a padded vice grips to immobilize the rack, and then turn the tie rod with a pipe wrench.

However, if the steering rack itself is leaking or just shot, consider changing out for a new rack, which will include the tie rods.

I thought I'd be ok doing something like that, but haven't worked on the steering before and wanted to make sure.
I'm leaking power steering fluid from somewhere, but not sure where yet. Everything else seems ok.

Thank you for the help!
