Heat shields
Heat shields
How important are the heat shields under the car for the exhaust? Mainly the ones for the cat and mid muffler. They're causing an annoying buzzing at certain RPMs. Can I get rid of them? Or should I just try to secure them better?

They are somewhat important.
I have silenced a bunch of heat shields by use of silicone caulk in the big tube with a caulk gun.
The ones on Volvos are usually easy. You bend the heat shield over and clean the heat shield and the floor with a damp cloth and then be sure it is dry. put a liberal line of the silicone caulk and push the heat shield into it and let car sit a few hours before you drive. The clear silicone outdoor grade has a high enough temp rating to survive this and it is not a picky adhesive as far as cleanliness goes. The stuff will not stick to oil or grease and a heavy layer of dirt but otherwise it is going to do its job. It is great stuff for silencing interior stuff that rattles when clips break or tabs break off. Be a bit more conservative with it there as it may be stronger than the trim pieces if you ever need to take those pieces off again.

had my transmission rebuilt last August on V70 T5, 2001 (at 140k miles) and noticed lots of road noise afterwards. Shop said imagining it.
Now I'm getting massive heat burning from drivers side floorboard. I'm guessing the heat shields were removed and not replaced. Can any shop replace or must it be dealer service. What will this cost?

Most muffler shops should be able able replace what's missing at a better price with universal product.
