P80 PCV System Repair on a Volvo 5-cylinder (-1998)

I came across some beautiful (or terrifying, perhaps) pictures of a '00 V70 GLT's engine that had a completely clogged PCV system - the Swedish poster remarked that this car was probably only minutes or hours of driving away from a failure.

I did the PCV switch on the 850 T5-R I had earlier, following the write-up in this thread, and it was a breeze, even for the relative newbie I was then, and I'm going to follow it again for the upcoming job on my current S70 T5.

That's mainly what I was referring to is a catch can sort of deal. Someone did a post on this here.

On a turbo model, I think it would be possible to increase the venting of the system through the attachment of another vacuum hose to the PTC. If there IS a vacuum hose in the PCV system on a NA model (I don't know if there is or not), you could try that out as well - you seem to be one who likes to experiment with things and find a way to make them work. In a turbo, that hose attaches to the passenger side of the intake manifold; a splitter could be added at the other end of that and another hose attached to the vacuum tree.

If there is not a lot of smoke or pressure (can it fill up a balloon placed over the dipstick tube?) just drive it & don't worry about it for now.

When you say this, are you meaning something to the effect of adding a second vacuum nipple onto the PTC valve/thingy itself?

I might try that to solve my smoking..... (The system was replaced, and I still have excess pressure....)

Okay, I recently did an intake cleanout with seafoam on my 96 850 N/A, and after the heavy smoke went away the car now has white smoke coming from the tailpipe and also from the flex pipe coming off the exhaust manifold at the back of the engine. I just now finished servicing the PCV system. I cleaned the ports to the block, cleaned the separator box, replaced all the hoses, and threw away the flame trap. There is no puffs of smoke out the dipstick anymore, so I assume the system is okay now (the lower port on the block was clogged, the small plastic tube from the passenger side of the manifold to the flame trap was completely blocked, and the large plastic line from the separator to the flame trap was pretty clogged up too, so it definately needed servicing. The car runs fine, but there is still noticable white smoke from the tailpipe and the back of motor, which is very noticable when it comes back to an idle after revving it up. there actually seems to be some water coming out as it left a small wet mark on the driveway. I have not driven the car since doing the seafoam treatment and the PCV system, but I have let it run for about 15 minutes after finishing the PCV system, and when I did the seafoam, I let it run until the really heavy smoke cleared up. The car never smoked out the tailpipe or at back of motor until the seafoam...could I have damaged something, or is it possible there was so much crud in the motor that it will take a while to clear up? The intake manifold was super dirty and I cleaned it spotless. If anyone has any input, please help. Car does not overheat, runs well, and there is water/oil mixing....

Hi. Sorry for the delay. Didn't have any blockage in the ports. I stupidly stuck a shop vac up to them, not thinking that it would suck out oil Going to check egr and will do compression test. Thank you. I'll let you know!

Ok just finished PVC job on my sons 97 850 non turbo. Ordered a IPD kit they said it had all the hoses then some because of some variations in motors. The only problem is I thought it would come with all elbows that would be needed but the main one that fails on the left side of intake manifold isn't included also the hard plastic tubing that runs from the separator to the flame trap isn't either mine was plugged and when trying to remove elbows it snapped they do include one that has curves where as the original is just straight I ended up using the one provided but had to run it along with the hose that goes to the top of the motor between the 2-3 cyl intake then along the fuel rail to the flame trap. They did get it to me in 2 days west coast to Ct. but I've used the FCP kit before and it was a direct replacement so I think Next time I'll stay with the FCP a little more expensive but if your on their mailing list you usually have a discount coupon. I also didn't have to go under car did everything topside. The other thing I was wondering is if anyone ever opened up a separator my ports were clear but was wondering if theres something internal that clogs?

I know my PCV system is clogged by the oil seeping past cap but I really don't want to start tearing apart my 210k mile engine. I found a vented oil cap on an amazon at the junkyard which is a direct fit on my whiteblock. Ran a hose from the oil cap to a small catch can and from there the gasses are fed into the dirty side of the airbox. I used a copper elbow from home depot which is glued onto the vent. I was paranoid about leaks so I smeared a bunch of ghastly red RTV at the last minute which was probably not necessary. Anyway, it works so I won't be removing the manifold any time soon.

Brilliant! Why didn't Volvo come up with this when they designed this engine?

Btw, my '68 Lincoln Continental is vented the EXACT same way.
