I like it much better! The colors certainly blend together much more effectively. 
Is there anything that can be done about the ads though? Perhaps a different order, or a neater display for them? They still see a little out of place with everything. Like they're sorta plopped wherever (not sure if you have control of that or not though).

Ed, ads are what pays the hosting (as well as donations) so I don't have many options. They are what they are. Individually their designs have gotten much better over the years in my opinion.
Another unfortunate reality, besides the ads and the space they take up, is that I have to get actual content up as high as possible on each page. Think about someone using a laptop. If they see a page's unique content without scrolling, my job is done. However, if the same top stuff shows on every page, I've failed and they're going to surf away.
Take that for instance. If I make the header too big and it goes down too far, users with small screen see (without scrolling) the same thing every page. Those users are more likely to leave.
If I can get each page's unique content up high enough (the second highlighted box) then users are more likely to stay, read, join, contribute, etc.
So yea I'd love to be able to stretch out and not worry about space, but reality dictates otherwise

I LIKE THE BLUE!!!
I haven't taken a look at your new design on my laptop from home, but as someone who usually browses the web in a partial-screen window rather than full-screen, yes, scrolling down through a huge header might get annoying. The top is a little busy; I think some of the stuff under the forum tabs could probably be reworked somewhere.

Much better!!! I understand the issue with the adds. They look like they are overpowering the top now for some reason, even though they are the same size as they currently are. Could just be the picture that is causing it, I don't know.
