2003 S60 Radio Removal and Replacement (HU 613)

Post by backwoods »

The display went out on my 2003 S60 so i purchased another HU-613 matching radio on ebay and then found out all of the local techs won't touch it...

I am looking for instructions for removing trim and radio. Tried searching, but came up with different radios, different years, etc. and none for the HU613. Not sure if they are all the same. I am afraid I'll tear my trim and dash up if I don't know exactly where to pull and pry... :D

If it helps, the radio looks like this:

You will need a plastic pry too or an old cutlery knife that is on of the ones that is in now way sharp anywhere.
Pry up the panel around gear lever starting at back edge. Do not pry the panel immediately around lever with the PRND432L but the panel around that one. Once that panel is loose at back edge slip it back 3/4 inch as there are metal tabs at front to slide out. Have gear lever in N.
DISCONNECT BATTERY, probably should have said this first.
Once that panel is loose the panel will slide up off the PRND432L panel bu pushing a tab in each corner underneath.
Seat aside removed panel.
Under the right and left edges of CCM panel are two TX25 screws, remove and don't drop them.
Take a piece of coat hanger wire and cut it to a 10 inch length. Bend the end over with a bent end no more than 1/4 inch long.
Get a paint stir stick or yardstick piece. Push the kitchen knife or plastic pry tool into the gap between radio and CCM to create a gap for the 3/16 thick stick. With the gap held open use the wire tool and insert it sideways 3 inches turn so the hook is down and pull CCM out. There are metal U springs pulling the CCM up. The CCM has tabs that stick up and go into openings in bottom of radio. You are dropping CCM enough for tabs to clear and then pulling the CCM rearward to free it.
Unplug connectors on CCM and set aside.
You will now see two TX25 screws with captured washers holding radio in on the radio's aluminum frame. Loosen and remove those two. Pull bottom edge of radio outward and then the radio will drop down. The dash has a ledge that radio frame rests on and the top of the framehas a U channel that slides under an edge on dash frame. The bottom has to bepulled rearward to get off the ledge and then the top drops off the that edge.
Pull radio out and disconnect its connectors.
Installation is reverse of these instructions except the CCM will slide back onto the springs and tabs will pop up into slots with no prying or fussing around.
These instructions are the same for P2 99-2004 (not the XC90)..
2005-2010 P2 have the CCM and radio in on carrier so it is actually easier as the whole deal comes out with the scrws at bottom and then you separate components once the whole panel is out of the car.

Thanks for the reply, Jimmy, but according to the instructions I found and the videos on You Tube I have since located, your instructions are not totally accurate for my model. I have the "Pen Holder" between the gear shift and CCM panel which comes up to reveal bolts holding CCM panel. Removal of gear shift panel is not required for my model. I'll know more once I dive into it... Thanks again...

It's not required, but it's easier and will prevent scratching if you yank it. I just did this a couple of weeks ago. There's also a guide somewhere in the archives here.

i have one problem now... The problem with the old radio was that the LCD screen was busted and un readable... The swap was EASY and went well, but now the new radio has a minor problem... It's buttons don't light up. My daughter found instructions on line for replacing a bulb in the radio with a part from Radio Shack... Anyone heard of doing this before?
