s40 front and rear shock replacement?

hi all. my 01 s40 has 125k miles on it and the shocks are shot. i've gotten a few quotes on replacing front and rear...most are around $1200.00. i don't even think the car is worth that much.

i'd like to replace them myself, but i've never done shocks on any car before. (other stuff, but not this).

can i get some step by step guidance if anyone has the time?
