2000 Volvo V70 Rotor Replacement

Post by 2000V70DW »

Hi, I'm looking to change the FRONT rotors on my 2000 V70, can anyone give me any tips before I get started? Any special tools I will need? Anyone have any links to step by step pictures?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

remove pins, remove pads, remove calipers(15mm) and hang them up by wire. take out 10mm pin, knock rotor off
I like volvo rotors because they come with new mount bolts and painted center part. rebuild caliper seals if you want to(cheap and fun to do).

When you reassemble the front brakes be sure to use the correct torque "steps" on the wheels and use the "star" pattern to apply the torque. Not doing this is the leading cause of warped rotors.

Have a small sledgehammer at the ready. One of mine took near 10 minutes of beating the heck out of the thing as hard as I could to knock it off.

In that write-up, he uses a pair of pliers to compress the piston back into the caliper - DO NOT DO THAT! There's a good chance you'll push at an angle and scar the metal or screw-up the gasket. Instead, head to AutoZone (or your local favorite) and spend 9 bucks on a brake spreader. It really should be called a piston compressor, but whatever . . .

I'd also get a bottle of brake grease and lube up everything - forget that little packet the comes with some pads. First, it makes sure squeaks are kept to a minimum. Second, it smells great - what, am I the only one that thinks that? :?

Since you're down there, take a look at your ABS pickup sensors and give 'em a good scrub-down to keep 'em clean.

Well, don't pry directly on the piston. If you put the old worn-out pad in front of it and pry on that it is fine to use pliers IMHO. But the spreader does make it easier.

I pushed my floor jack and caliper up against the control arm and pushed [the piston] back in against it using the jack.
