Best deal for 850 replacement keys?

Post by mc510 »

My local Volvo dealer wants $66 for a replacement key for my 1996 850. They'll have it made from the original key code (which I kind of like, since my only remaining key is a pretty heavily used duplicate) but 66 clams is painful. I've seen mention here of $10 or $20 keys from dealers; can anyone name a dealer that's cheaper than mine? I'm thinking I'd give them a call to see if they can do the job for me by mail. Thanks

Buncha dealers in the Bay area - make some calls!
And check with the locksmiths, too.
Some are sure to have blanks.

Ace Hardware (if you have them in your state). $28.00 each. Ebay has them, they'll also cut them for you.

For $66.00, that dealer better include an all you can eat lobster meal with the key!

Thanks guys; there's actually a great locksmith near my home that I'm sure could duplicate my existing (and badly worn) key, but I'd prefer a new "factory fresh" key and I think that only the dealer can create a new key from the code, right? I gather that dealer prices can vary a LOT, so I'm just wondering if anyone knows of a dealer that does keys for a reasonable price.

Interesting,

I thought that Darrell Waltrip quit shipping out of state. They are absolutely the best parts people I have ever worked with.

Osmium & JRL, did the dealer cut a duplicate of your existing key, or create a brand new cut from the VIN/key code? Great prices either way, but awesome price if it's a new cut from the code.

Lee, I can't say if Darrell Waltrip has changed their shipping policy; this is the first time that I've contacted them and the guy didn't hesitate about out-of-state shipping, but I suppose that could be a special case for very small items like keys.

By the way, no reason to shelter the guilty: $66 is the price at McKevitt Volvo of Berkeley.

They always cut from the VIN, their key machine is made for that purpose

That dealer should hang their head in shame
These are simple non coded ($4.00 blanks) keys, anyone can make them
