1998 V70 AWD highway speed vibrations Topic is solved

Looking into a used 1998 V70 AWD with about 61k miles on it.

At 60-65 we noticed slight vibration and some 'road noise' as well. When we returned to the dealer, I found that there are 3 matched tires, and one same brand, but brand new tire on the rear passenger side.

I've seen comments, and have Volvo's document stating at a minimum, two tires should be replaced and put on front, but strong recommendation that all tires be replaced. The three older ones have about 1/8" tread left, and the new one has around 3/16 to 1/4" tread.

Is it possible there's damage from this? The dealer told me (before I brought it up) that they had replaced one tire because of a cut in the side wall of the old one. I'm guessing there could be up to 1000 miles with the new tire. The used manager has been driving it he told me.

Should I be worried? Should I do any particular checks on the car?

I would stay away from that car. Unless it's a *very* good deal

There will always be others, many of which have drivers that know how not to cause a $2000-3000 problem.

What kind of vibration did you feel? It might as well be the reason that the wheels might need a high speed balance too. However, if that is the first year for the AWD, maybe you might consider another S70. And in my opinion, 2WD volvos are as good as the AWD ones. You may want to buy a T5 instead.

I had the same vibe and only replacement of the fore to aft driveshaft solved it. I suggested they rotate the driveshaft coupling 120 degrees but they ignored my suggestion (I used to balance helo rotors and drivetrains).
