00 S70 - Driver seatbelt stuck

Post by Gatekeeper21 »

When I got in my car earlier and tried to put on my seat belt, it locked after I pulled it out about a foot. I took the trim off and manually reeled it to almost it normal position, but it is still stuck (I was hoping it would make it unlock). I looked around, but don't really see anything that I could possible do to fix it...Is there something I can do? If it was one of the others, it wouldn't bother me to not be able to fix it for a few days, but since it is the driver's, I would like to get it working as soon as possible. I saw in another post that some people said the actuator from the SRS may have fired off. My SRS light is not on and I don't notice anything out of the ordinary, but how would I know if this is what happened? Thanks for any help

After looking around online, I have pretty much come to the conclusion that it could possibly be repaired, but it could also possibly cause it to not work properly for its intended purpose in an accident. I have looked around and found a few used ones on ebay and guess i will probably go that route...going to check salvage yards locally just in case, but i have not had much luck in the past. If anyone has any other info, please let me know.

Try to unreel it by pulling upward. The pawls on the latching mechanism have a tendency to get stuck with age. I have fixed one of them by oiling the base of the reel that it coils up on but it was a bear to get it loose in the first place.

Got back from the junkyard with a replacement belt, and the belt had wound back up all the way so the latch was against the reel / mechanism. Could not get it to unwind. Ended up destroying it trying to see what was the matter with it. Started looking at the other replacement belt, (passenger's side) and it gave me the same trouble. Finally got it to unwind by SLOWLY and GENTLY letting it retract a small amount, then trying to pull it out. Apparently the more they are retracted onto the reel, the less they want to come out. So if you are getting one from the junkyard, try to figure out a way to keep in from retracting more than it's normal position. And if you get it home and it does not want to unwind, don't panic.

good point Sid, when i was installing a third seat in my v70, I faced the same challenge of the belt winding up.
I pulled it out a little but and but some vise grips on it to hold it in place.
