With one HG&TB job done and confidence running high I got into the TB change on my wifes 1996 2.0L 850 T5 tonight.

After lining up the crank marks i noticed the cam marks are not where they should be. I have stripped the other end to check the cam slots and to me this looks out of time on both cams? The car seems to run ok, although after driving my resurected 2.4 Turbo it is a little gutless in low revs but i had put that down to the smaller engine.

I am planning to loosen the cam sproket bolts, rotate the cams so the slots are in line etc. It seems straight forward but I am surprised that the car runs ok as it is.... am i missing something?

Also on the air pipe from the filter box to the turbo there are 2x vacuum nipples just below the flange with the box, before the accordion section. One is connected to a hose from the cluster block thing that screws to the box which i think is right but the other has nothing connected. Is that normal? I have searched for vacuum hose layouts but nothing seems to cover this. There is no loose hose that i can see.

Comments welcome.

If the crankshaft mark is lined up correctly you are one tooth off on both cams. That is easy to do if the belt isn't taught around the idler roller to the intake cam and the tensioner gets released.

Compress the tensioner very slowly when you fix it.

Thanks Lee, any idea about the vacuum hose nipple question?

From what you describe on the vacuum lines it sounds like you are talking about the turbo control valve - it should have three lines going to it. We never had any 2.0's here in the US so things may be different on your car. We do have turbo vacuum line diagrams in the repair database.

Turbo control valve is fine, three lines conect there including one short one up to the air pipe. Next to that connection on the air pipe is another open nipple. Have checked through the diagrams and no joy. Will post a pic later.

I believe you're talking about the line that (should) connect to your fuel pressure regulator on the inside of the right fender.

At least, that's where it is on the 1998 - I think a 1996 850 is the same.

I think the OP means the second nipple on the air intake (see photo below) just downstream of the MAF.

I replaced this hose when I did my PCV recently and didn't know what to do with it either.

There was only 1 nipple there (which connects to the TCV)on the original hose on my 94 turbo Wagon.

94s and 95s have the fuel pressure regulator under the fuel rail. On a 1996 model this regulator was changed to a different design and a dampener was put in the place of the old regulator. 2 vacuum lines - one from the turbo intake hose and another from the front of the intake manifold - connect to the fuel pressure regulator that is just behind the right side tire.
