96 850 n/a issues

I have the exact same issue. Parked the car one night, the next day it makes the same noise as in the video by volvo_96.
Does anybody have any ideas what it could be?

Have you checked your oil level and the condition of the spark plugs? Maybe do a leak-down test, too.

Oil level is normal. What does the condition of the spark plugs have to do with this? It is not running rough.

The condition of the plugs can help to tell you if anything is a bit cattywhompus. If you have a Chilton's book, they usually have pics of plugs on the last page that can give you an idea of certain conditions.

A leakdown test is testing the compression in the cylinders. That'll help to know if there's a stuck valve which Justin suggested, or something else.
