catback exhaust drone

Post by t5ftw »

I installed a EST catback today on my 99 S70 T5. And it is lot louder than I expected between 1700 rpm and 2300 rpm. This is a little annoying because unless I am hard accelerating or breaking it will be in this range. My mechanic cut 3 1/4 inch at the end of pipe to prevent the tip from sticking out. Other than that, he just connected it to the pipe from the stock cat converter. Also, he had to attach the pessenger side arm of the front muffler to the third (lowest) hole of the rubber hanger, making it sag a little, whereas the stock suitcase used to be attached to the middle hole. Could this have to do with it?
This is the first exhaust mod in my life. So, maybe it is just me because I don't know what to expect. I know it sounds stupid that after all this modification, I am complaining about it.
I would appreciate any advice on how to eliminate or reduce this. Thanks.

Does this catback system have a resonator after the muffler?

Volvo responded to complaints in the 850 range by adding an optional catback system with resonator.

If yours doesn't have one perhaops you can ask your exhaust guy to add one; it will alter the sound and perhaps make the sound tolerable.

I find this interesting
I also have an EST exhaust on my T5M and I found it to actually be TOO quiet stock so I removed the rear resonator and put a straight pipe in.
It now has a nice tone but still not too lond at all and NO DRONING.
(also please note I'm 67 years old and I do not care to be annoyed with unnecessary noise and I hate the 5 cyl drone)

Another thing I noticed about the installation is that when my mechanic connected the catback to the pipe from the stock cat, he did not weld it, but just use the stock clamp there. Could this be an issue?

No
A real EST exhaust do NOT drone at all, something is incorrect somewhere

talked to my exhaust guy again. He said that I should just drive around and give some time for the pipes to seal themselves. It seems to me that either that or just get used to it. I already drove 600 miles over the weekend, and I will see in a next couple of weeks.

You should find a different exhaust guy....exhaust pipes aren't self-sealing.
