socket for oil change?

Changing my oil for the first time and don't have the correct size socket (don't have any metric ones). What size do I need?

Should be a 17mm.

You could also try a 11/16th size. That is the closest thing to 17mm.

For the record I like to use a box wrench for this (yes, 17 mm). I am more likely to over-torque it when I am reaching back there with a socket on a ratchet. The box wrench doesn't give you as much leverage, I get better control over the tightening. It just needs to be snug,you don't want to strip out the pan threads.

use a 6 sided 17!

Amen to the 6 sided socket. Too many drain plugs have had the heads stripped off using 12 point sockets or 12 pt box end wrenches.
